WENG WAI
A Versatile Saxophonist
with Global Experience
Passionate Performer, International Artist
One of our saxophonists Weng Wai, is a Malaysian saxophonist whose musical journey began at the tender age of 5. Initially learning the electric organ, he later transitioned to piano and saxophone under the guidance of Mr. Vincent Chin at 13. This pivotal moment led him to pursue a career in music. Weng Wai completed his Diploma in Music at the Malaysian Institute of Art under a full scholarship, majoring in alto saxophone and minoring in composition, studying under Mr. Julian Chan and Miss Yuan Leow Yun. He furthered his studies at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music in Sydney under Mr. Paul Cutlan and Mr. Sean Coffin, also on a full scholarship.
A Symphony of Performances
During his studies, Weng Wai began performing in lounges and, events, and weddings. He has been involved in several recording projects with the renowned composer, arranger, and producer Mr. Art Phillips. His musical influences span jazz, pop, fusion, funk, and many other styles. Since returning to Malaysia, Weng Wai has played with local musicians such as David Gomez and John Ashley Thomas at venues like Alexis, No Black Tie, Nero Fico, The Scots, Dewan Philharmonic, and the ESG Jazz Festival.
Performances for Prestigious Events
Weng Wai has had the opportunity to perform at the Jakarta Jazz Fest 2012 and Java Jazz 2015 with the RTM Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dato Mokhzani Ismail. From 2013 to 2015, he performed at the Dewan Philharmonic for the All That Jazz concert, featuring famous local artists such as Atilia Haron, Elvira Arul, and Dina Nadzir. He has also ventured internationally, taking part in Jeff Chang’s (张信哲) world tour. Currently, Weng Wai is a regular saxophonist for Fish Leong and often tours around the world with her.
